Understanding Your Child's Temperament

The following statements can assist you to determine if your child is "difficult" or "easy" to manage. It's intent is not to be a scientific instrument merely an indicator. Answer each on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the lowest score and 10 the highest.

1.) My child is agreeable when I ask him/her to do something the first or second time.

2.) My child accepts direction easily, doesn't mind being told what to do.

3.) If I tell my child to stop doing something he/she shouldn't be doing, I usually don't have a problem with him/her again after that.

4.) When my child is disappointed about something, after he/she doesn't get his/her way, he/she will usually calm down after about fifteen minutes.

5.) When my child was an infant he/she was easy to soothe and keep happy

6.) When my child gets angry, he/she expresses anger appropriately. He/she never curses at me, yells or hits me.

7.) My child is good with things like taking turns, sharing, and cooperating in a group.

8.) My child rarely hits, pushes, or bites other children in a group.

9.) My child seems to understand when he/she has behaved poorly and feels sorry about it later.

10.) My child describes himself/herself in positive terms (i.e., "I am a good boy or girl.")

Figure that a score of 6 or 7 means your child is about "average" compared to other children you see or know. Most parents will score their children between 60 and 80. If you find yourself scoring your child below forty, then your child is probably more difficult than most children, and you will need to develop your parenting skills. If you score your child as higher than 80, then your child is probably a bit easier than most.
